Active and Sustainable Travel: Child Friendly Redbridge Ambassadors Blog

As part of this active travel blog, we want to help amplify the voices of our residents. In this spirit, Khatira, one of our Child Friendly Redbridge ambassadors has shared her thoughts on the importance of active and sustainable travel.

Khatira Kazemi, Mayfield School, Year 11.

"The main reason I have started walking is to be able to have a little break from the continuous home atmosphere and it's been proven that 30 minutes of walking is very beneficial for your health, both mentally and physically.

The other main reason is just how much risk you are putting yourself in when using public transport. From this, the carbon emissions all around the world and in big cities such as London have reduced significantly due to less travel which is probably the best and only good thing that has come out of lockdown.

I used to take public transport for places that took around half an hour to walk to. Now I have been walking those distances and I think I will carry on to even after lockdown eases to avoid using public transport and putting myself at risk.

I would recommend young people and anyone in general to walk or cycle more as you can listen to your favourite music, podcast, audiobooks or to catch up with friends and family. My only concern for after schools open, is that young people who live far away from their schools will have no choice but to take public transport, especially those with working parents. "

Climate Change in Redbridge

Thank you for contributing to improving Active Travel in Redbridge.

Over the last few months we have been working to respond to the Climate Change Emergency declared in June 2019. The Council committed to developing a plan to make all the council's operations carbon neutral by 2030 and to reduce all emissions to zero by 2050. This means we will need to use green power, insulate our buildings more effectively, facilitate active travel and use electric vehicles, among many other actions.

Our work on Climate Change is led by a cross-party Corporate Panel of councillors. The panel’s work is underpinned by evidence from a Green Audit being carried out by Eunomia, which is enabling us to understand our current emission sources and possible pathways for reaching our targets. The Panel will be making recommendations to Cabinet in October. As any actions will affect our residents, we need your help to understand your priorities and help us reach our targets.

We want you to have a go at setting the council’s carbon budget. You will be given 55 points to spend on different initiatives the council can adopt to address Climate Change in Redbridge. These range from food and transport, to energy and property. Your input will help us understand your priorities and help shape our response to the Climate Emergency. You also have the opportunity to share any further ideas you have.
